Bad Girls Need Love Too

Oh dears, I’ve been a very bad girl haven’t I? Too many days have gone by, I know, since I last updated. Shame, shame on me!

Bad Girls Need Love Too

Alas, I’m back after a long hiatus. Though I’ve been silent here, things are brewing behind the scenes. I acquired a ton of exquisite lingerie ranging from the 1930′s to the 1960′s; so many girdles, garter belts, bustiers and full-fashion stockings! I’ll be sharing those goodies with you all in the coming days, so do stay tuned!

In the meantime, I’m also working on some new blog posts, reviving old features (aka, the return of ‘Loose Buttons’), and designing a new website for Mairose Boutique to take root.

Exciting times are on the horizon! I hope you’ll join me on my new journey!

Until next time….

Darling, There is Still Time for Love

Time For Love

Cora stood on the balcony overlooking the river, huddled in a thick blanket, her arms outstretched over the railing. She clutched a single ivory-colored dahlia in her hand, it’s folds were delicate and the petals still fresh. A week had gone by, and it surprised her that the flower still flourished, especially since she herself felt so wilted. Impulsively, she tugged a petal loose from the bud and twisted it between her fingertips, smiling at the silken texture and then cringing when it released a heady scent that reminded her of summertime, clove cigarettes, chocolate and grass. The scent of her lover. The memory of a time long gone. Her heart ached with a pang of desolate loneliness.

The river below churned and did not concern itself with the feelings that were washing over the woman above. The hotel room behind her was a disheveled mess; clothing was strewn about the room as if none of it had been worn, but rather tossed aside in frustration. Empty champagne splits littered the floor in a way that can only mean one thing: an enormous mini-bar invoice. It was of no concern.

Cora glanced down at herself and wondered if any of the people on the other side of the river had noticed a nearly-naked woman prostrated across the balcony rail. She could not say, if anyone dared to ask, what this feeling was that caught in her throat and made her feel so….

The longing. It was getting to her. She still wore the silk teddy that her lover had presented to her, wrapped carefully in a small golden box. It was so very dear to her, this delicate thing. She loved the feel of the silk against her skin, and the way it hugged her curves. It reminded her of romance and sleepless nights.

She turned the dahlia again, plucked another petal and let it drift slowly into the river, watching it closely until it disappeared beneath the water. Another petal, drifting and falling, then another, and another until only the bud remained. Cora closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. The flower was destroyed, and it broke her heart.

But then she heard a faint sound of footsteps, and then the electronic signal that the door to her room had been opened. There was no other sound, besides the river roaring below. Eyes still closed, she dared to turn around slowly, and using her senses, sniffed a new scent on the breeze.

The scent of honey, red wine, wood smoke, and pepper greeted her, and her ears heard the quietest murmur. Not a word, but a feeling expressed through the very fabric of skin sighing and breathing. Cora opened her eyes and smiled.

Her lover stood before her, clutching a bouquet of violet foxglove. When they had last parted, it was because they had run out of time together. But now….

Now. This moment. It existed and for that, Cora was grateful. She moved to take a step forward and whispered:

“Darling, there is still time for love.”

Vintage Lingerie Spotlight

Oh, lovely Sunday! As much as I would like to relax and lay around, I’m working hard today on putting up new listings of vintage lingerie on the Mairose Etsy shop.

This sexy nightgown by Undercover Wear is very long, very red, and very sexy. You’ll be a total knockout!  Only $32 plus shipping!

Vintage Red Full Length Nylon Nightgown

Vintage Undercover Wear Nightgown

I almost don’t want to let this vintage slip out of my hands. It was well-loved by the woman who owned it previously. She sewed a nifty patch in the left-bra cup, replaced the straps, and kept the chiffon from drying out. This is a garment that was clearly very special to someone. Could it become very special to you? $36

Well-Loved Vintage Slip

This white nylon and spandex bustier was made in the mid 1960′s by the ILGWU for the legendary brand, Goddess. It has original metal hook & eye closures in two rows sewn into an elastic band which sits low on the back. The bodice has flexible boning and underwire-shaped cups. The lace is in perfect condition, pristine white and seemingly never worn!  It’s absolutely perfect for wearing underneath any vintage wiggle dress, or a wedding gown, or just on it’s own with a pretty cardigan thrown over. Or be truly daring and layer it over a button-down shirt, add a pencil skirt and a great belt, and viola! Total sex kitten! Meow! $40

In My Dream, We Were Taller Than The Trees

Oh, what a fantastic week I’ve had! I had the good fortune of being able to take a week off from my “day job”. A week vacation. Glorious glory, hands up to the sky! When this long break comes to an end, I will likely cry, it has been that wonderful. I stayed home all week long, basking in the opportunity to reset my circadian rhythm and tend to the little garden that is my soul. Sometimes I think my spirit is a tiny speck of pollen, sleeping inside of a furled-up rosebud.

Mairose Instagram

Long ago, I planted seeds to grow my dream business into something of a reality. I daydreamed, brainstormed, and thought about it all the time, as if I had a film reel playing on a loop inside my head. I wrote, and planned, and wrote, and planned some more. On it goes for a few years. Now, “things” feel as if they must happen soon, or not at all. I am on a cusp, a brink. Mairose must bloom, it simply must!

I’ve been hunting and gathering, searching and seeking, pulling up beautiful vintage lingerie to share with lovely women everywhere.

I cleaned my office, organized my wares, tidied up my little “store-front” (over on etsy), went on tiny missions, and wandered around the yard in a daze. Dreaming, plotting, scheming, writing, and growing.

I made a sale to a dear friend. I drank wine with another. I had lots of quiet time to work and think. And lots of time to talk about my plans with my family, get everyone’s input and give them reassurance and hints of what’s ahead.

Mairose Instagram

AND SO. I take tiny steps forward. I look for signs and see them everywhere. The rose blooms eventually. The actual garden is in bloom, spring and summer straddling the cloud-line.

Mairose Instagram

My dreams repeat similar themes; in one, I dreamt I grew as tall as a tree. When you dream about growing, it’s because you are GROWING.

May I grow up right in front of your eyes?

A Touch of Hollywood Regency

One of the best things about living with my fiance’s family is watching classic films with his Grandmother. She always has her television tuned to Turner Classic Movies. I often catch glimpses of gorgeous Hollywood Starlets arguing the finer points of romance with their beaus (who are wearing smoking jackets, inevitably), all while standing around gracefully in a satin nightgown and fur robe. Like, no big deal. FUR ROBE. Serious glamour for a serious romance.

Hollywood Regency

If you are anything like me, pretty nightgowns catch your eye. I love finding (okay, hoarding) vintage nightgowns. They are definitely my ‘collectors-weakness’. The beautiful nightgowns that follow are perfect examples of lingerie I’d love to keep. But they are simply too lovely not to share!  So…..

NEW in the Mairose Etsy shop are two nightgowns that surely would have been part of a Hollywood Starlet’s wardrobe.

John Kloss was a mid-century dress and lingerie designer, beloved by the NYC film and theatrical community. His innovative designs were favorites of Anne Bancroft, Liza Minelli and other celebrities. In 1968, Kloss opened an exclusive boutique at Henri Bendel, producing many different collections at any given time.

Kloss’ garments were sculpted to drape upon the female form beautifully. Working with exquisite fabrics cut simply, yet elegantly, he produced sophisticated evening wear. In the 1970′s, he adapted a collection of lingerie designs with the launch of CIRA. Bras were sculpted without underwires, and nightgowns were free-flowing and seductive.

This sophisticated CIRA nightgown is no exception to Kloss’ talent. It features a deep-cut back and elegantly-draped bust with flutter sleeves. The gown seems to simply “sit” on the shoulders and fall to the floor, with a long, flowing skirt that moves gracefully with every step.

Undercover Wear was the budget-friendly gal’s best lingerie resource of the Mid-Century. The brand designed lovely nightgowns for everyday glamour and seduction, with long, sweeping hems of lightweight nylon in styles meant to create  flowing, graceful silhouettes.

Undercover Wear Peachy Silk Gown

This Undercover Wear maxi nightgown from the 1970′s is a peachy, champagne-colored gem. It features a faux-wrap empire-waist bustline with a flirty chiffon ruffle that drapes from the bust diagonally to the waist. The gown’s faux-wrap creates a seductive slit that starts just under the bust, falling back to reveal the upper thigh. Like I said, seductive!

Cheryl Tiegs Full Length Robe

If the penny-pinching Starlets can teach us anything, its that having items in your wardrobe that can be worn with many other pieces is key to a well-stocked closet. This silver-blue satin robe looks amazing on it’s own, or paired with either of the nightgowns above. The black Kloss nightgown definitely brings the elegant, classic style to another level. And the peachy frothy gown from Undercover Wear has a more relaxed allure when worn under the shimmery, lightweight robe.

If you are looking to add a little retro glamour to your life, then look no further!

In the meantime, I’ll just be over here in the corner hoarding a dozen other gowns which I cannot stand to part with!

Loose Buttons: Inner Voice Edition

These days, I am realizing more and more that I don’t listen to my inner voice enough. After a while of ignoring that small voice, the volume has been turned up in my brain until words and thoughts bump against each other in a grand cacophony. So today’s Loose Buttons is all about looking for truth that comes from within.

Loose Buttons & Love

♥ Sometimes you can find doses of hard truths from the most random of places, and oftentimes from complete strangers. This list of ‘thirty things you must stop doing to yourself’ hit me in the heart a few times; these especially stood out to me:

Stop thinking you’re not ready. – Nobody ever feels 100% ready when an opportunity arises.  Because most great opportunities in life force us to grow beyond our comfort zones, which means we won’t feel totally comfortable at first.”

“Stop overlooking the beauty of small moments. – Enjoy the little things, because one day you may look back and discover they were the big things.  The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.”

You Are Here In My Heart by Jake Stanton

You Are Here In My Heart by Jake Stanton

♥ I love this dark, enchanting editorial shot by Aleksandra Zaborowska and featured in MODO. Crow-feathers, crowns of blood-red roses, gothic corsetry, and flowing chiffon create a mood reminiscent of an erotic ballet.

♥ Did you ever spend hours getting lost in making mixtapes for your friends and current-crushes? I know I did, and looking back I can’t put my finger on why mix tapes mattered, but they were so important to me! The right mix tape could turn a long, boring drive into one where I sang my heart out for hours. Other times, a tape was meant to convey a certain message; if you gave one to someone you cared about, there was the hope that they would love the music as much as you did. Getting a mixtape from someone could cause instant butterflies and nervous giggles. So much power!

Relive that kind of magic over at Everyone’s Mixtape, where you can find the perfect playlist for Sunday morning, a long drive, a summertime BBQ, or even your next make-out session. Brilliant!

Ease-My-Ears

♥ Did you know that scientists have discovered the “Most Relaxing Tune Ever” (you can listen to the song here)? What do you think, did you find yourself sufficiently relaxed after giving it a listen? I know I feel a little lighter!

♥ Another great muscial compliation site, Songza has playlists for Cooking Dinner, Spending Time With Your Kids, and Creating A Cool Atmosphere. Win win!

♥ Have you ever struggled to find words to describe certain feelings, only to find there just isn’t a word that’ll do it justice? Well, the Dictonary of Obscure Sorrows is full of heart-tugging definitions to help you out. This one is my favorite:

“rollover reaction ~ n. when your dream about someone you know skews how you feel about them all the next day, an emotion you are unable—and unwilling—to shake.”

♥ I love this illustration from a book of fairy tales! That Fox sure is FOXY, no? Vaaa-vaaa-voom!

Beaver Fox Promenade

♥ A dear friend shared this link with me recently and I could not stop laughing/smiling/crying. This is Safe For Work, I assure you. Behold, ‘Bon Iver Erotic Stories‘:

“Bon Iver is sitting cross-legged on the floor, his brow furrowed. It seems he and the jigsaw puzzle have come to an impasse. We’d bought it secondhand, and the box had been lost, so we were left to guess what shape the pieces would take. We weren’t even sure they were all there. I suggest he take a break for a bit and clear his head. ‘I can’t,’ he says, ‘I need to make something whole today.’”

HA! All of those little Bon Iver parodies read like The Notebook on crack! Which one was your favorite, dear reader? And, just so you don’t think I’m bashing Justin or his music, I’ll just leave my favorite Bon Iver song here. ; )

♥ I really love the artwork of Daniela Uhlig. Especially this one, which just might be inspiration for my next Halloween costume. Love this soooo much.

♥ Finally, I’m off to see Andrew Bird at the House of Blues in Boston. I’ve been waiting happily for the opportunity to see him play! So excited!!

That’s all for now kittens! Love you!!

A Whole New World

Hello kittens! At long last, I have most exciting news!

Welcome to the new and vastly improved Mairose Boutique! The site has gone through an extensive re-design, thanks to the talents of the wonderful Viva La Violette.  Much love to Heather for her incredible patience and creativity throughout a very long process, and for presenting me with the website of my dreams (literally). I highly recommend her services if you have need of any sort of graphic design! She’s gracious, patient and full of southern charm! She won’t steer you wrong! Check out her portfolio, and stop by her blog if you are at all interested in the nuts & bolts of running a website.

The second bit of great news is the launching of my Etsy Shop, Mairose Boutique, where I am able to share with you all of the lovely vintage nightgowns, robes, slips and shapewear that I find in my travels around New England. Please take a peek! I’d love to hear your feedback about the shop, and the pretty little things I’ve found so far.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to stop and smell the roses; this is a project that I have been working on, and towards, for many months (and years, if I’m being honest). Launching a website that more closely resembles my aesthetic, and being able to launch an online shop is just the first stop on my path to breathing real life into my dream of opening a brick & mortar boutique. I can’t help but smile ear-to-ear and giggle like a wee thing whenever I look at this finished product. Its like seeing part of my dream actually materialize!

For those of you that have followed my blog from the beginning, I thank you from the bottom of my heart! For anyone stopping by for the first time, I hope you love what you see and come back often! My obsession with lingerie never wavers, and I look forward to this new phase of my life.

Much love to you!

Garden Stroll

This breezy, ethereal photo shoot is making me long for warm days when only the most minimal of clothing could possibly be comfortable.I love the frilly, floral and utterly feminine mood; if you are bold enough for wearing lingerie as outer-wear, this is a perfect bit of inspiration for pulling that off.

Let’s go cherry picking and stain our fingers purple!
